Recipe: Iced Coffee

Do you like cold coffee drinks as well as I do? I love Starbucks Frappuccinos but hate to buy them because they're so overpriced! I have been able in the past to buy them at Walgreens or K-Mart for only $.25-$.40 after coupon which is a really good deal but that doesn't happen very often. So I was very excited when I stumbled across a recipe for Iced Coffee on The Thrifty, Frugal Mom that tastes very much the same as a Starbucks Frappuccino! Like Lydia mentioned I like the fact that this recipe takes simple ingredients that most everyone should have on hand.

Iced Coffee
3 C. Brewed Coffee (I used a french vanilla roast coffee)
1 1/2 Tbsp. Instant Coffee
1 C. Sugar
Milk (1/2 - 3/4 gallon)
Ice
2 T.Caramel Syrup (Optional)*

Mix hot brewed coffee, instant coffee, and sugar together in a gallon pitcher until sugar is dissolved. Add caramel syrup if desired. Add 1-2 trays of ice cubes.** Add milk until pitcher is full. Stir well.

*I think the caramel syrup gives it a good flavor.

**It depends on how watered down you like your coffee. Lydia usually puts in 1 tray of ice cubes and then when she thinks it's cold enough she scoops out the ice cubes that haven't melted. I probably put in a 1/2 tray of ice cubes and wasn't able to scoop them out before they melted. I think the next time I make it I would probably leave the ice out and just let the drink chill in the fridge.

I'd love to hear if you try this recipe and whether you like it!

  1. Can't wait to try it! I would use decaff for myself and make a smaller amount. Sounds yummy! Thanks!

  2. We love iced coffee too, but I make it alittle different. I brew coffee double strength, then add sugar (about 3 T. per cup) while it's hot. We keep this in the fridge then just make it up a glass at a time. I don't measure, but put some of this in a glass, add some flavored creamer, (we like hazelnut) then fill glass with milk and icecubes. Proportions depend on how much coffee flavor you want, etc. We go through alot of this in the summer.

  7. Rachal, I think on Lydia's orginal recipe she uses decaf for one of the coffee's. I didn't because usually caffeine doesn't bother me and I didn't have any decaf in the house.
